Balaclava Boy: Jenny Robson, March 2, 2016
My rating: ♦♦♦◊◊
This short story introduces Tommy, the new kid at school, who perpetually wears a balaclava. Tommy’s classmates find this unusual and, naturally, wish to unmask (sorry!) the reason behind the cranial attire.
Robson captures the spirit of schoolkid jinx, and tells a clever tale. The imaginative class come up with just about every explanation possible, and a few rather zany strategies to find out the truth.
The author makes her point very well in a final twist, and raises some very interesting and topical questions. Though aimed at middle-school, where the pupils would certainly be challenged, adults too can gain from the message Robson conveys.
