My Brother’s Shadow: Tom Avery, February 23, 2016
My rating: ♦♦♦◊◊
My Brother’s Shadow is a gorgeous book, filled with beautiful illustrations. Kaia describes herself as “frozen” since she discovered the body of her brother, who had brutally killed himself. She and her mother are both unable to come to terms with the loss, and this is their story.
It’s a sad story, and Kaia is very much alone until she meets a newcomer at school who doesn’t ever speak.
As things progress, the reader doesn’t have the opportunity to get much closer to Kaia, to get inside her head and feel what she does.Everything unfolds from a distance, and the book would have benefited from drawing the reader in more.
