Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Rodrick Rules: Jeff Kinney, July 6, 2014
My rating: ♦♦◊◊◊
It doesn’t get any better. The follow-up to Diary of a Wimpy Kid is as bad as the original.
Protagonist Greg is still an annoying little twerp who is completely unlikeable. He holds no redeeming qualities; simply, he hates his brother and disparages his unfortunate friend at every opportunity. This book is simply full of characters having a great time making everyone else miserable.
The set up of a diary blended with cartoons is a good idea, and some of the illustrations are quite funny. They’re definitely the best bits, in their understated way. But this is no Beano. It lacks any character development, consequences or even a plot.
I have to accept Diary of a Wimpy Kid is overhyped drivel and must abandon the series here.
